Parting gift for nanny RSS feed

Tomorrow is our nanny's last day with us (she's been with us a little over 4 years). We gave her many months notice and glowing references and are so happy that she's already lined up another job. As for bonus/severance, we already told her we will continue to pay her for four weeks after her final date of employment when we gave notice. We will let her know tomorrow that we will extend that to five weeks. We also are covering her health insurance premium over the next month as well.

In addition, we'll also be giving her a picture of the children, a heartfelt note from me and DH thanking her for all she's done, treating her to lunch out tomorrow, and then pictures the kids drew. Does this all sound like a good parting gift? I wish we could do more--she's been such an amazing part of our lives, but financially things are a bit tight right now so the even the five weeks pay will be a lot and doesn't leave room for other gifts. We already provided her with an excellent reference and she has another job lined up.

I think that sounds very generous and heartfelt. I’m sure your nanny will appreciate all of the gifts. Also, see if she still would like to see the kids on the weekends.

That is all perfect OP. No need to feel badly at all - you've handled it beautifully.

Just be clear with her that you are happy for her and that you will be happy to take reference calls in the future.

All sounds great, OP. My only addition would be to set a firm date to have her over for a meal and to see the kids. “A week from Wednesday” makes it easier on the kids and the nanny. Hopefully she’ll still see the kids occasionally or babysit for you. Four years is a long time in a child’s life.

You're all set.

She has been with you four years and all you're giving her is a little a month's pay?! Your heartfelt note and crayon pictures by your kids plus $5.00 will buy her a cup of coffee at Starbucks. This is insulting. I would borrow from bank to give her a month's pay for every year she been with you.

Stop being an idiot. No ever does that nor should they. You’re the troll trying to make nannies look bad. Boring.

You’re fine, OP. I love the idea of a set first time to see nanny again and continued contact. We had a wonderful weekend nanny for two years who continues to visit and FaceTime my kids after five years! They love her and she loves them. She’s also a true joy in my life.
