We're thinking we might need an au pair next summer before our oldest starts kindergarten. DH works in DC and is schlepps the kids in with him into the city. I know there are some restrictions on visas at the moment, but I am thinking thou shall pass and we will be back to normal next year. When should I start looking/matching with an Au Pair? I am thinking we will have a pretty good offer with a basement suite (own entrance), own car, and two kids (5yo in kindergarden and a 4yo either at home or in daycare). I am totally open as far as what country they're from, but would prefer an Eastern European or German au pair since our neighbors had a good experience with them.

You will not have any trouble matching with a Spanish or Portuguese speaking au pair, and really only need 6-8 weeks lead time. You may or may not be attractive to a West/North/South European or S.African/Australian au pair - the conditions you have described are pretty standard - and they can be/and are picky. Eastern European candidates frequently have difficulty getting visas b/c organized crime/habitually over stay visas. If you are looking at these countries, you will need to start in early Spring.
