Childcare for parents working afternoon shifts RSS feed

My child just turned 6 months and both my husband and I will be working afternoon shifts starting in June. Does anyone have recommendations for nanny shares or daycare that accommodates people who work 10-6:30 or later in the evening in DC?

You can set whatever hours you want for your nanny. Finding a share to accommodate in your home could work, if they want similar hours or part-time (10-4?) and you host. You're not going to find a good daycare that goes later than 7pm.

You can find a good nanny willing to work those hours. Ask around work for a nanny share. Daycare for a baby that young and those hours would be a huge mistake, IMO.

^^I agree w/the above poster that to put a baby that young into a daycare would be a bad decision.
Your baby would not get one-on-one hands on care - it is likely he would have to share his provider w/three other babies.

Which means he will likely need to wait on a “first cry, first serve” feeding.
And he may have times will he will have to sit around in a soggy diaper while waiting for another child’s needs to be taken care of.
Not to mention all the germs, viruses, etc. that he will automatically be susceptible to every day.

Can you afford an in-home Nanny?
If not, a Nanny Share may be a great alternative.

Perhaps you can ask around and/or browse online childcare websites.

The hours are fine.
I know many Nannies would love a job that starts mid-morning!
Wishing you all the best OP!

I agree with the above posters. Daycares are generally short-staffed for the early evening hours (5:30 to 7) and the providers are exhausted. Not a good place for a baby especially when they generally hit that fussy time between 5 and 7.

The adult to infant ratio in a daycare is typically 4:1.

I used to nanny and I worked 12-8pm. I preferred those hours. You just need to find someone whose not a morning person. Shouldn’t be too hard

I liked my afternoon shift. Zero rush hour in the evening, and mid-morning is much better than early morning rush hour.
