Nanny has COVID: DC Paid Family Leave? RSS feed

Anonymous
Our nanny is sick with COVID. We weren't exposed, and hope she's able to come back in two weeks, but what if she's still sick? I know DC has implemented a paid leave act (and we're contributing to it via employer taxes) should we pause her payroll and have our nanny file for benefits?

Does anyone have experience with this?

Pay your damn nanny who has covid. My goodness.

Thanks for the snark. We love our nanny and because our work and virtual school was winding down for the year, we gave her Thanksgiving through New Years off. She got sick just before she was supposed to return to work. So we're actually on seven weeks of "paying our damn nanny" to stay home.

If anyone has any knowledge or experience they'd like to share about DC's paid leave program, I'd really appreciate it.

You pay the two weeks that is mandated in the CARES act legislation.

Anything beyond that is out of the goodness of your hearts, which it seems you've already demonstrated beyond reasonable measures.

The paid leave is under the FFCRA and didn’t it expire Jan 1st?

I know for last year, you can get any sick leave paid out due to COVID reimbursed on your taxes. I’m in VA though and paid out leave in 2020 while the FFCRA was in effect, so if there is something more DC-specific, I am not sure.

A quick google search shows me that the tax credit for providing paid leave (up to 2 weeks) has been extended through March 31. So it’s now no longer required to pay out sick leave, but you will get a tax credit for the amount you pay out, so you may as well pay her since it shouldn’t cost you*

*I have no filed taxes yet so this is just my belief how the credit will work.

I’d pay Her for two weeks and look for another nanny. To catch covid means she wasn’t as socially distant as should’ve been. OP I’m sorry you’re going through this and hope you find someone better - no I’m not the nasty poster above

Hmm. Yes and no. Just one outing and you can get covid. Something innocent as sharing elevators in your building, or grocery shopping where you touch things and rub your itching eyes or else can infect you, right? So let’s not judge her since we do not know how she contracted it and how careful she tries to be...

Maybe - maybe not. But she has a nanny who has had covid and therefore very unlikely to get it again and spread it to her family. I’d keep the nanny.
