Two 14 month olds - new share advice needed RSS feed

Anonymous
I just started my 3rd nanny job. I’ve been a nanny for 5 years and this is my third share. But this is the first time I haven’t had infants.

I’m having the worst time trying to get the girls to nap.

Any tips for how to get two 14 month olds (1 of them never been in a share) to take naps?

Both moms say they are both okay mappers and take naps in the afternoon at home.

Wait... are you trying to get them to do a morning nap with you and then they do an afternoon nap at home? Or are you just doing one (afternoon) nap each day?

Keep trying. Some kids don’t nap. Mine never did.

I'd try shifting the nap to a later time if the parents are OK with it. It may get better as they get used to the share.

Talk to each of the parents and find out what each parent is doing to put the child down for a nap.

Can you tell when each of the kids gets tired? It will be a while before you can get them on the same nap schedule. Start just by getting them to nap on their own schedules. It will be better for one on one time with you anyway.

Part of your problem may be that the parents hold the children until they are asleep and then put them down. They may not have taught them how to fall asleep on their own.

You really need to just talk to everyone and see what’s been going on.

Are they on one nap a day or two? If still two may be time to drop to one.

Yikes OP!
You definitely have your hands full.

My best advice would be to remain patient as it can take some time for both children to adapt to the share.

It would be a good idea if you could ask both parents to wake the children up around the same time every morning so it will be much easier for you to coordinate a daily schedule.

Good luck.

More power to you, OP. There is no way that I would start with two unrelated toddlers unless they were just replacing the previous share nanny. At least in that situation, the toddlers would be acclimated to each other and on the same schedule.
