Hi, looking for some rate advice. We usually pay $23/hour (45 hours/week, with applicable OT, etc.) for our toddler DD. We are talking to a candidate who would like to bring her 5-year old while he attends virtual kindergarten. Would you still pay the same rate or would you lower the rate?

I would definitely lower it. Probably $18/hr. |
I’d look for a different candidate with less baggage |
There is NO WAY I would hire this person. A 5 year old is not developmentally capable of sitting in front of a screen for hours at a time doing virtual school. Your child will not get the supervision they deserve from a nanny. |
^^I agree w/this. |
I would lower the rate yes. But the bigger question is are you ok with your toddler being in the house tied to his DL schedule until he goes back FT? |
1. I’d want to see the school’s dl schedule and compare to the 2yo’s schedule.
2. I’d want assurances from the nanny that the 2yo would get outside morning and afternoon, even if the 5yo has to sit on the step to do dl. 3. I’d want assurances that the 2yo would be supervised at all times, and any deviations of attention from 2yo to her kindergartener would be quick and easy questions, nothing over 30 seconds. 4. I’d want a call with her child’s teacher to discuss whether this is really appropriate for this student, and whether this particular child can function during dl with minimal parental involvement. If I couldn’t get all 4 answered satisfactorily, I’d either move to a different candidate or pay at most $13/hour, the cost of 1/2 of a share. |
Thanks all...we’re going to look for a different candidate. |
That’s a good decision, OP. If your child was also a remote kindergartener, it would be a different story. |
Not unless they were in the same school, preferably the same class! There are plenty of horror stories about kids being inside all day because there’s nothing oh one adult to supervise and they’re on different schedules. |
This is basically a nanny share. $15 max as theirs will need a lot of attention. |
