Paying for a second quarantine due to travel over holiday? RSS feed

Looking for advice. Our nanny decided to fly to a state where Covid is literally surging right now for Thanksgiving. We were really hoping she would cancel her trip as the whole thing felt so selfish and irresponsible. She didn't and we are paying her for her 10 day quarantine ( 8 working days fully paid). She has gotten a negative Covid test and is coming back on Wednesday.

She is now flying to an even more covid ridden state for Christmas. She is using all of her PTO so will be gone from the 23rd- 4th fully paid. Do we really need to pay her for another 10 day quarantine? I want her to at least have to use her PTO ( it would have to be pre- earned) for this second trip. Everyone else I know has canceled travel/ family plans ( including us- we did a zoom Thanksgiving).

I really like her and think she is being careful about Covid here but ugh- just paying for so much care we aren't getting and it feels like too much.

MB...I would definitely start to feel like I was being taken advantage of. I feel like the second quarantine should be unpaid, at the very least...and that’s still a pain for you to have to arrange backup care.

I’d look for a new nanny

Our nanny is doing something similar and if she hadn’t been with us so many years, I would terminate her because it is incredibly reckless and puts us all at risk. However, my DD is very attached to her and we don’t want to introduce someone new into our household during the pandemic. So we paid for the first quarantine like you did but she has to cover the next 10 day quarantine and covid test with her PTO and sick leave. If she didn’t have it, she’d have to take it unpaid.

This all should have been discussed beforehand, OP. Yes, she should quarantine after returning and get tested but both vacation and quarantine should be out of HER vacation/pto like any company would do. You should not have agreed to the time off for the second trip, OP.

Unpaid. And if nanny is comfortable traveling for both holidays, I’d wonder what else she’s comfortable doing when she’s not at work that may be putting your family at risk.

No, you don't pay her.

She is choosing to go she needs to use any pto or go unpaid for quarantine.

Why would you pay her to not work? This is PTO and unpaid time if she runs out of PTO.

Fire her. If she is traveling like this, I am doubtful that she is following appropriate COVID precautions in her off time. I would not want someone who chooses to travel during this pandemic taking care of my children. Yes, many people are traveling. They are selfish and irresponsible, and taking a risk of infecting themselves and others (like you and your family).
