Nanny tested positive. Now what? RSS feed

Obviously she won't be working for the next few weeks. Assuming hers is a mild case (she is in her 30's), when will it be safe for her to be around me and our children again? Should she test negative before she returns? Once? Twice? Do we all need to test or just stay quarantined for 14 days? FYI, I will be paying her salary but juggling 3 children under 5 and trying to keep WFH is going to be beyond stressful.

YES! You are your entire family absolutely need to completely quarantine now for two weeks - not even one trip to the grocery store. Test now and at day 14.

You should take this time off work, OP, even though you’re working from home. This is a big deal and your employer should understand.

I have no clue how bad your nanny is going to get it so no one can say when she’ll return.

+1. And inform our doctors immediately. They’ll do contact tracing and insist you completely isolate/quarantine as if you all have covid. Demand emergency leave from your jobs to care for your kids.

This is a big deal, OP. Your nanny was unmasked and in very close contact with your kids when she was a symptomatic and highly contagious. Your last thought should be about your jobs.

No - she doesn’t need a negative test to return. She just needs to be 10 days past her first symptoms or positive test is she doesn’t have any symptoms and fever free for at least 24 hours.

Did you see her the 48 hours prior to her getting symptoms/positive test? If so, you are required to isolate your family for 14 days. If anyone gets symptoms, the clock restarts and there are new rules.

Are you really so stupid that you have to ask this question?!
She tested positive and even, someone with a flea size brain, should know that "YES" YOU GET TESTED.

This is grossly inaccurate for someone who is so insulting.

Unless anyone in OPs family is symptomatic, testing is not recommended-only quarantine.

I would not test. You can simply assume that you all got it and act accordingly. Notify everyone with whom you were in contact, isolate for 14 days. Once you ate done isolating, your nanny can return to work (assuming she does not have any symptoms by then.) I know this is very stressful, but you can do it! Good luck!

Personally I would test to make sure I didn’t have it and was just asymptomatic. I would also ask the nanny to get a negative test before returning. While symptoms can go away, you can still test positive even after 10 days (this happened to my BIL who is a first responder).

It’s so stressful to take time off work and juggle kids right now. There are a lot of people who will be rude about it, it just remember this isn’t easy. You’re not alone in thinking this is really hard- it is. You can get through it and hopefully your nanny will be back very soon.

And you can’t test out of quarantine.

OP here. I can't take time off from work, so life is a little crazy. I get their meal and snacks but the children are on their own while I work until Christmas week when I had vacation planned anyway. So far we've had some incidents but no one has gotten hurt and no one feels ill. Under other circumstances, my MIL would help or we'd get a temp. But we're basically quarantining until January.

she needs to quarantine. i think it be unpaid time off or pto. You will need that money to get supplemental childcare.

If the nanny is positive, no supplemental childcare!!!

On the leave front for you and the nanny
https://gtm.com/household/paying-your-nanny-covid19-pandemic/

There is a federal law and protected benefits. If you pay your nanny legally you should pay attention to the info in that article.
You likely also qualify from your employer. I would contact your HR.

Thanks for asking this, OP! I’m a nanny who tested positive this morning. My employers are pressuring me to return to work Wednesday. I’ve already told them no as my systems didn’t start til Friday. I just wanted to say, thanks for
being a good employer!
