Au Pair Wants to Fly Internationally and return to our family RSS feed

Our au pair just informed us she would like to take an international flight home to see her family while she still can (during first year). How can we best support her desires to fly home to Columbia to visit with her family for one week and protect our family? These seem at odds with one another. Are people supporting this with measures such as putting her up in a hotel for a week or so on her return plus ensuring she is fed all while covering short term childcare for several weeks while AP is gone?

Commercial flights between the US and Colombia are currently closed. She may be able to get home on a reparation flight and then return via a third country (two weeks outside of Colombia) but it won't be easy.

Colombia resumed international flights 21 Sept 2020

If she paid for the hotel and several covid tests I would be ok with that. I would not pay for a week of hotel.

She can stay in a hotel by herself for two weeks after on her own vacation time and expense I guess. Welcome to the pandemic.

Is she extending with you? I code my APs the extra money I save. Use it for the testing and hotel. Or offer her the money and see if she really wants to go home. It is about $1100.

My agency charges $1100 less if my AP extends.

Hi OP - We have a Columbian au pair and she has concerns going anywhere (especially her country) where COVID is high/rising. I personally would not encourage an international flight with all the added precaution and costs and definitely would not pay for them. Voice concerns of potential risks to her and your family. If this is her first year, it's most definitely rough but you can you encourage whatsapp video chats with her family/friends. GL!

Exactly, our AP wanted to travel during the holidays. We said fine. Then you need to quarantine and use your vacation time.

Wouldn’t that put her over two weeks of vacation?

1 week paid, 2nd week unpaid after 1 week of travel.

Would not really bother me, but we have vacationed to Mexico a two times since the pandemic and are headed to Costa Rica for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately our AP cannot come on that trip because she is officially in her 2nd year.
