J-1 visa ban? RSS feed

So how worried should we be about this? Would Trump really kill the au pair program to improve the employment rate of U.S. citizens?

I think it'll depend on how exactly it is written. It seems it will be targeting summer work programs, not necessarily au pairs. Also with consular services closed worldwide, nobody can obtain a J-1 visa right now anyway - so isn't that a defacto ban as it is?

Good. Americans should have every chance for jobs.

I just received the email from CCAP. I had no idea this was even on the table.

So, to answer your question OP, I don't think we can predict what Trump will do, but I'd take it seriously and would advocate for the program.

It will mean that rematch and extension APs are even more in demand.

I'm with CCAP but didn't receive an email - can you cut and paste the text here?

What percentage of American parents are really allowing the AP to teach the child her native language and culture?

I am with APC and they rarely send this type of email. Here is what I got:

Action Needed – Write President Trump in Support of Int’l Exchange

The White House issued a proclamation on April 22 suspending some immigrant visas for 60 days. The Administration is currently considering including Exchange Visitors in a second executive action that could be issued as early as this week. This would include au pairs who are in the country on a J1-Visa.

We are asking that you take a few minutes today and use this form to send a letter to President Trump urging the Administration to exclude international exchange programs from any future executive action suspending employment-based immigration. The campaign is being led by the Alliance for International Exchange. It should take only a few minutes for you to send your letter.

As you know, cultural exchange programs help support our national security. Exchange visitors develop a more positive view of the United States and maintain friendships here for years to come. Additionally, these programs add more than a billion dollars to the American economy each year.

Please take a couple of minutes to write to President Trump advocating that the Exchange Visitor Program is a cultural exchange, not a work program, and should not be included in any executive action regarding employment-based immigration.

Thank you in advance, and for your continued support of the au pair program.

Our AP communicates to our toddler solely in the target language (our requirement) and to us solely in the target language (her choice). When she cooks (rare), she cooks her native foods. She organizes holiday celebrations from her tradition. She takes (pre-quarantine) toddler to target language events. She now does zoom language events with toddler. We would not have an AP were it not for the language piece.

Same for us. The only reason I am willing to deal with the hassle of having someone live in my house, restrict my food choices, etc. is for the language/cultural exchange. This is my gift to my children. For me, having a nanny would be MUCH easier.

Where do the children learn about their own culture?

It sounds like the parents are prioritizing the originating culture, not American “culture” which they can experience at school and with friends as they grow up. There is a very, very narrow window to establish a native accent, and that’s what these parents are doing.

When they are school-age and no fully longer in an target language immersive environment. Our DD is 2.5 and doesn't speak English. And we do not care.
