How is everyone handling the latest school closures and precautionary measures in regards to your nanny’s duties? Still asking your nanny to work, assuming they are comfortable, while you either go into the office or work from home?

My wonderful employers gave me the choice to work or take sick leave but I chose to work. I am low risk as I live alone and walk to work.

Extra work requires extra compensation. Duh.

Just as no work equals no pay. Duh

At first I was really pissed at the situation-parents home, kids home, can't really go anywhere but now as I'm hearing how it's affecting other industries and blue collar workers I'm kind of glad I have a job and will continue to work and get paid.

Many nannies have been given two weeks payed, I know because I’m also a nanny. Others have been offered an extra money because their bosses realize it’s a danger to ask the nanny to come to work when we are supposed to be home for this illness to pass.

+1. Same. I chose to continue working too. I’d miss my little charge too much if I stayed home.

That said, I am going to talk to my employers on Monday about some ways to make all of us in one house and their working from home work for all of us.

That’s not entirely true. I was given 2 weeks off and I’m getting paid for them and it’s not hurting my vacation time. Guess it just depends on the families you work for.

I’m working an my boss is being super careless and putting all of us at risk. She’s going to yoga, spending hours at the grocery store, setting up play dates for the kids, having food delivered, going to restaurants and just generally being unsafe. I literally never take sick days, but when I get coronavirus (it’s everywhere in my city) I will be staying home the full two weeks and getting paid. Even if I feel better, I’m staying home 2 full weeks. I’ve been with the family for many years and I’m astounded about how they are behaving. They didn’t prepare and have no groceries!

You are getting paid to do a job. You either go or not. But, if you leave the family hanging they will need to find someone else and you will probably be out of a job. Many people still have to work out of the home. Your risk being in someone's home is much less than someone going to an office. Parents who are working at home still need child care.

Our nanny is working. DH and I are working. DH has to go into his office Monday to get some things but we're otherwise working from home.

It's going to be ... interesting.

Actually you are wrong. For the next two weeks any employee can file for sick leave. A nanny has to consider the health of herself and her family and you should be more concerned about the health of your children than your job and not want additional people in your home.

Try firing your nanny for taking sick leave in them next two weeks. You will be a pariah in your social circle.

And I am a nanny who freely volunteered to work my normal hours as I live alone and walk or drive to work. I am limiting my exposure on weekends to protect myself as well as my charge.

What are you rambling about? Everyone cannot just take sick leave. You have to be sick to take sick leave. Many people have jobs that are required to be in the office. A nanny is working in a home and far less risk than someone in an office. I would absolutely fire a nanny who is working in my home if they refused to come. People have nannies so when these situations happen, they are always covered with child care. If your employer doesn't work and loses their job because of you, you are the first expense that will get cut.

Please sit down with your nanny and set some ground rules.

For me, as a nanny, my big one is: if you don’t want to be disturbed, don’t come out of your room. I’m not going to pull your child away from you.

And no walking around the house talking on your phone. Your toddler doesn’t understand why you’re ignoring him.
