Our AP has been with us about 3 months. She's a good Au Pair, kids like her, etc. Something that is bugging me though is that she has SO MUCH specialty food. She's Chinese and has so many different sauces and spices and products. It's literally overflowing onto our countertops (we have a drawer for her in the pantry cupboard but it's bursting!) and our fridge is so full things have started to fall out and break everytime I try to find the mustard or something. Obviously I want her to be comfortable and have foods she likes but I think this is getting too much. She cooks her own breakfasts and lunches and has dinner with us ~3x per week or will eat her own lunch leftovers. We had a previous Thai au pair who also preferred mostly her own foods but she didn't buy quite so much stuff!! Is this normal? How can I limit this without being a jerk? We have a small kitchen and it's just too much stuff!!!! |
Is she buying lot of ingredients in advance? maybe you can ask her to buy small quantities because the fridge is on the smaller side? |
It's almost all stuff that keeps for a long time like spices and sauces. She uses the fresh veggies and meats that we buy and are in the rest of the fridge. |
Maybe get a small bin for the sauces to go in within the fridge. That way it's her designated space and reduces the rsik of things breaking. It is annoying when others don't recognize that they are just bleeding into others' space. |
Who buys this food, OP ? If that's you, just stop buying it.
Tell the AP that the cupboards are full and that you don't want to spoil food and that you need to eat all of this before buying other stuff. At some point just tell her nicely, she will understand ![]() |
