Travel over Christmas

Disclaimer: Not my situation, friend (employer) asked for advice.

Friends are travelling to see family over Christmas. They denied their Nanny's request for time off because they "need" her to go with them.

I said "WTH.... Why can't you deal with your own kids?" Well they want to visit with the adults. They need the Nanny to entertain the kids, feed them supper, put them to bed etc. Nanny is not happy of course. I expect she will quit.

I'm not actually looking for advice. I told them to be parents and give Nanny the time off. They seemto think they own the Nanny.

But.... do people actually do this?? It sounds like something very wealthy people do...or the kind of people who see their kids on a schedule.

Would anyone here deny their Nanny time off at Christmas to make travel easier?

Parents who can afford “own” a 24/7 professional nanny pay a minimum of 100K a year. If this woman stays with them, she’s a doormat, not a nanny.

That's the thing though.... they think they can. She isn't even a live-in Nanny. She's there from 8 - 4.

Almost every time we travel we bring our nanny. If they don't want to come, we hire someone who is happy to work over the holidays.

We do have alone time as a family. Each day there are a chunk of hours when the nanny is off the clock. So for example, when we went to Disney World a couple of months ago, and the nanny came with us, we'd leave the suite by 8 or 8:30, get into the park around 9 or 9:30, and generally the nanny would either do the entire morning with us or the entire afternoon with us. Then alternate covering lunch or dinner. So maybe the nanny would work from 1pm to 6pm, then 7pm to 11pm so DH and I could go out to dinner. Or the nanny might have a day that's 8:30am to 2pm.

We have one nanny who we've had for over seven years. But if our nanny is not available to travel, we use someone else.

Why do you need a nanny in Disney World?! I seriously do not understand. I get that it’s great to go out to dinner alone but it’s a family vacation and you should take meals together as a family. As a kid, those dinners out on vacation were some of my best memories. You can go out to dinner with just DH at home.

OMG, that poor nanny! I can’t believe you can’t handle a trip to Disney World with your own children.
