Looking for a reality check here...
We have a nanny whom we adore and whom we believe adores us as a family in equal measure. She has a competitive compensation package. We have paid one week/year end of year bonuses, but we are approaching a point, after several years together, where we'd like to cap that bonus (her wage growth is outpacing ours) Us four weeks of pay a reasonable cap or are we being unfair here? Looking for both nannies and employer thoughts, thanks.6 |
Completely fair and super generous overall. I started at a week’s salary, but it only gets increased by a couple of hundred per year. I would also start putting money aside for severance, where the standard is one week’s pay per year worked, but capping that at 4 weeks would also be fair. |
Four weeks is fair.

Thank you both. Hopefully severance is many, many years away! |
You don't want to give her a week's bonus for all she does for you? Do this and see how fast you are looking for a new nanny! |
Go back and reread the OP’s post slowly and aloud if it helps your reading comprehension. |
Capping bonus weeks is fairly standard at four years. So is capping vacation time.

Read the original post. Nanny would get an end of year bonus equal to 4 weeks wages. However, in years 5, 6, 7, etc. the bonus would remain 4 weeks instead of escalating one week per year.
The question is whether nannies feel that sort of an upper limit on bonuses is fair. Do you? |
Mine was capped at 4 weeks and I felt that is fair. |
Nanny here and yes that is fair. |
If possible, add her some benefits that are brand-new instead of more ca$h per hr.
Perhaps let her wash her laundry at your house. Or help pay into her health insurance. Or you could pay to upgrade her cell phone. |
I would have capped it at 2 weeks. |
It's fine IF you told her this at the beginning. If not, then you need to tell her ASAP and hope she agrees. |
End of year bonuses are discretionary, so how would having told her at the beginning even been an expectation? Do nannies really expect one week per year for ten years?? |
No, of course nannies do not expect one week per year for ten years. This forum has infamous and pathetic trolls. My employers have always given on month’s salary and it never changes. They are very generous. My last employers gave me 2K after three years which wasn’t even two weeks pay. In actuality, that “bonus” was my unused vacation time. |
