Halloween- AP Working? RSS feed

Does your au pair work on Halloween, and if so, what does s/he do?

I’d love to take my 3 little ones out for an hour this year, and have my au pair pass out the candy. Just want to make sure this is reasonable since many young girls like to go out that night, and mine is a social butterfly

You can ask her to go with kids for trick or treating but you can’t ask her to stay home and pass out the candy. I mean, you can ask her but she doesn’t have to do it as it’s not her job or kid related task.

You want the Au Pair to stay home so she can pass candies to the kids coming to your house on halloween? Why? it's not a lot to ask an AP but why not just pop out with the kids and leave a bowl of candies by the door or something? Kids care more about candies than having someone opening the door for them....

Ask her to help from 6-7:30 but not after.

I think its ok to ask her to hand candy out earlier in the evening. But let her go out afterwards.

My spouse works and I take DD out and leave candy by the front door.

We have zero interest in Halloween but our AP has already given us instructions on what costume to buy toddler and dog so that she can take them trick or treating with her. I think some of them really want to try and celebrate.

All of our au pairs have been super excited by Halloween, as it is an American tradition they want to experience. They are happy to take the kids out and/or pass out candy as this is a real novelty for them. I guess the only problem would be if someone is not interested or you have having them work outside their hours. It has always been fun for everyone in our house.

+1. Its been our APs favorite day of the year. All have helped decorate the house, carve pumpkins, get dressed up, etc. But they've all wanted to go trick or treating with us for an hour or so, since that's part of the experience.

We have totally asked our au pairs to do this and they have been happy to do so. I think as long as their free to go out and party from about 8 on, it's totally fine.

That sounds like a really lame way for AP to spend Halloween. Why not just have AP come trick or treating with you and the kids and leave a big bowl of candy at on your front porch like everyone else does. If AP doesn't want to do that, just give her the night off.

Halloween is a huge holiday in our family and our neighborhood. Our au pairs have always loved to participate. We usually take turns handing out candy and taking the kids around the block. Usually we all end up on our stoop giving our candy and the kids honestly enjoy that more than trick or treating themselves. Our aps have a blast.

Nice cultural exchange!! Most other countries don’t celebrate Halloween and you want her first and maybe only Halloween to be spent at home handing out candy? Nice.

She can interact with the kids who come to the door---that is cultural exchange.

Thanks everyone for chiming in! We're going to ask her but will probably limit it to 30 minutes. My kids are young (infant, 2 and 3) so we're not going to be out for too long. It should still give her plenty of time to go out with friends too.

OP - I can tell your heart is in the right place, but I really think you should throw some candy in the bowl and have your AP come with you and your kids while you go around the block. She will enjoy it so much!
