Ok lawyers I need your advice. Does the new dc paid leave law apply to us? In other words, do we have to pay the tax and give our nannies paid leave? We couldn’t afford to pay two nannies if ours ever needs to take leave beyond the sick and vacation time provided in her contract.

I’m not a lawyer, but it sounds like you aren’t reading this correctly. The tax is so that the district can pay the employee, not so that the employer pays those weeks for two employees.
My concern is timing and eligibility. Most people who would need it most work in md/va, but live in dc, and they’re ineligible, or they’re government and ineligible. Also, the people who really need up to $1k per week are more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck. |
Also, this won’t apply to many nannies or employers for very long. Employees are only eligible after working 52 weeks. Most nannies move on to another family when the kids go to daycare/preschool at 2-3, 4 tops. So nannies are only eligible for 1-2 years, and employers will pay into the tax all theee years, but the cost is pretty low. |
