How much to pay a live-in, part time nanny? RSS feed

Anonymous
We live in DC and I am thinking of trying to hire someone for the summer who would live with us and watch my 3 and 5 year old after camp every day (from 3-6 or 7 pm). We have a bedroom and bathroom in our basement. How would I pay this person if I gave them a free room for the summer?

Well, if it is only for the summer, the “free” room isn’t much of an incentive. College students just coming home for the summer will live with their parents.
Do you live near a university? Maybe someone who is a student there and wants to take a summer class during the day? But unless you are very close to that school, it probably wouldn’t be worth it to them.

Ask them. Live-in for me wouldn't be much of a perk because not a whole lot of privacy. Also that's very few hours, so it would be hard to fill anyways.

This would be a great way for someone to see another part of the country without a year long commitment. I had a friend from England come and do this for the summer many many years ago. She paid for own flight over and then they paid her $150 a week to care for a 2yo during the day and 2 older kids after camp. ( this was 20 years ago) Price may be a bit off now but there are people out there looking for a gig like this. She also had use of a car all the time.

Was she a US citizen, or was she able to get a work visa for this?

She came on a visa waiver for 3 months. Did it under the table.

It sounds like you are mainly offering the room as a perk and not because you actually need the nanny living in your home. The key to reducing the nanny’s rate for the room perk is finding someone that would actually consider it a perk to have a room in your house for three months. That is a pretty small candidate pool, but worth investigating if cost is a big factor for you. You might also consider renting out the room and hiring a nanny separately. If you do find a suitable live in nanny, I would expect to lower monthly pay by $500-$800 depending on how desirable your setup and location are and how much food you provide to account for the room and board. You are looking to reserve 20 hours of availability per week, so if you would normally pay $20 per hour to this person for a total of roughly $1600-$1800 per month, then maybe offer $1000-$1200 per month plus room and board in exchange for availability for care from 3-7pm weekdays during summer.

So she was committing a crime (and so was her employer.)
I’m not sure OP wants the hire a criminal to care for her children.

Wow.
For just the Summer?

Oh yes - she definitely should be sitting in a jail cell, eating mystery meat with Christopher Watts.

Would the bathroom be shared?
