Bonus on nanny’s last day? RSS feed

Our daughter starts preschool soon. Our nanny has been with us in a share for a year and we love her. On her last day, should we give a bonus? How much seems right? We are in DC and each family pays $12/hour. Thoughts?

I vote yes.

Especially if you personally feel that she did a stellar job.

Great Nannies are not only worth their weight in gold,
They also are very priceless.

I vote yes as well. For your daughters sake, you will want her to babysit to make the transition easier. Show your love and gratitude to this woman who undoubtedly loved your child.

It is common and appropriate to give a parting bonus unless fired for cause. A week’s pay at minimum, and the general rule is one week per year worked. Some families simply can’t do that, but one week is fair.

A bonus would be generous of you, as PP mentioned especially if you like her to babysit. At a minimum a weeks pay is standard.

We did. I think we gave a week's pay (which was also what we gave as an end-of-year bonus while we were in the share).
