What are your most important topics to include in a nanny contract? I was just offered a new position and the family has agreed to write up a contract for the position and I want to make sure nothing important is left out. And in addition to the obvious items, what are some things you have (or wish you had) in your contract that we might not think of? Thanks in advance

1. Inclement weather
2. Annual raises
3. Late arrival- some parents show up late and don’t pay for your extra time. You can add the time to your check or they can pay a per minute fee in cash or via cash app (that’s what we do). Same for nanny. If she arrives late can you make up time, use PTO or is deducted from your pay

That’s the only thing we didn’t think about.

If you use your car to drive the child then I’d include gas and mileage.

current schedule
list of responsibilities (obviously will change, hence amendments)
approved discipline style
allowed release of children to which people?
visitor policy (play dates, boss' friends' kids who you are expected to care for with no notice, relatives)
emergencies
vehicle info, insurance, who fixes and how, mileage
compensation and benefits
reviews
jury duty/bereavement leave
traveling with the family
legal pay, how and when
due diligence
confidentiality
termination with/without cause

I know it's not sorted, I'm in the process of redoing my contract too.

how does one include raises in a contract?

Spell out which federal holidays you get so there is no confusion. As an mb I work veterans, presidents, mlk and Columbus Day so my nanny does not get those off. But we listed he specific days she would have off so there were no surprises.

number, name and birthdate for all children, amendment added for extra children. Compensation to be increased by $x in the event of another child joining the family, and by y% minimum per year otherwise.

Thank you. What is a typical minimum raise to request?

I would not agree to any guaranteed increases for a new nanny. This would be subject to negotiation at the review time depending on performance, market, and family finances.

What everyone said plus:

1. taxes. What taxes are taken out and what taxes employer pays if any on employees behalf.

2. PTO policy

3. Nanny cam usage.

I always state that it’s col increase, merit to be decided at review, and col is tied to something easy, like feds.

We had a 1 year term for the contract and I would not have promised a raise in it for past that term.

Other topics to cover include
Core hours
Location
Car use
Bad weather policy - do you follow Feds? Every day? First day of blizzard, etc.
discipline
Tv use
Phone use
Food
