Limiting pacifier use

My charge is 2.5 and still loves her pacifier. It is a NUK so probably the least damaging, but I still limit her using it. She knows that she can’t have her pacifier anywhere except her bedroom with me and is fine with that. However her parents let her have it all the time and anytime so Mondays are rough for us. Her teeth and mouth are clearly being effected.
However, since her parents don’t care - should I? By Tuesday, she is fine leaving her pacifier in her crib. |

| You should talk to the parents and let them know that during the week she only uses it in her room. Therefore, it would be appreciated if the parents keep up the same routine on the weekend because mondays are hard days for her. She should’ve stop using it over a year ago anyway, but hey too late now. |

OP here. Yes, we all agreed to limit pacifier use to her room only - and they don’t do it. I told them repeatedly how well she does by midweek without the pacifier in the car, stroller, playroom, etc and they are thrilled - and then let her have it whenever she wants it all weekend long. Mondays are hard enough but made even harder by having to break her from pacifier use all over again. |

Here’s what I have done with families. Mostly it’s the parents having a hard time, not the kiddo.
Have kiddo pick out a box (smallish like a small jewelry box). Every morning the pacifiers go in the box (nk gets the box,puts them in, puts back the box). Once nap time, nk gets the box down and takes out pacis. After nap they go back “to sleep”. It’s mostly out of sight out of mind. And like I said it’s mostly for the parents. |

| Maybe approach he parents about consistency. Tell them hat she does really well by the end of the week, but that Monday’s are such a struggle and that you feel that consistency will eliminate the struggle she has every Monday. Hen ask them if they would prefer to limit the pacifier, which is recommended, or allow it whenever. |

+1. Pacifier use cuts the risk of SIDS and should never be taken away until the 12 month mark. |

Pacifiers teach babies to breathe through their noses while sleeping, which decreases suffocation, not SIDS, for which there is no discernible cause. If pacifiers decreased SIDS, everyone would be told to give their a pacifier (hint: it’s not a universal recommendation). |
