Providing food for the nanny RSS feed

Anonymous
I’m a first time mom and we will hire our first nanny soon. If she is with our child all day, should we provide lunch for her, or lunch ingredients like lunch meat and bread for sandwiches? Or do nanny’s usually provide their own lunch? Our baby doesn’t eat solid foods yet and we generally eat breakfast and lunch at work, so there would not usually be a lot of food options in our fridge unless we specifically provide them for the nanny. Want to make her feel at home so wondering what most people do! Maybe ask her what she likes to eat for breakfast and lunch and make sure to always have that on hand?

Mine brings her lunch and cooks lunch for dd (with us since dd was 6 months and is now 2.5).
I have fruit and snacks etc in the fridge and always point out that the nanny is welcome to all of that. She has a pretty particular diet though so things like bread and lunch meat wouldn’t work for her anyway. Oh and if she wants to eat with dd, there’s enough food for both of them (soup, fish, veg etc).

Pp again. I found that my nanny would not eat things from the fridge st all in the first couple months. So i would point out in the morning “there are some nice fresh peaches I got at the farmers market, please have one”.

I suggest letting her bring her own things. You can say she’s welcome to bring fruit, veggies, etc. And keep them in the fridge or the cabinets. I’m a nanny and I keep bread and lunch meat the fridge. I also keep teas to drink. My charge is 4 and he eats “real food” like fish, chicken, meat, pasta, rice etc so whatever he has for lunch I’ll occasionally eat it with him

Peaches should not be refrigerated.

You can go halfway and ask her to bring her lunch and that you'll happily provide snacks for her. Maybe her favorite tea as well?

As a nanny I would very much appreciate it. I have never expected my employers to provide my meals.

+1. I have also never expected them to provide food, but it sounds like you want to provide food. Just ask her if there’s anything she likes that you can buy like maybe some snacks

For me, all my families have always told me to help myself to anything in the fridge or cabinets. I did have one family ask me what I liked and they would buy it for me but I declined. I bring (or buy if we’re out) food but I also leave stuff in the cabinet and fridge for the week- bringing food everyday is exhausting.

I am a Nanny & most of my employers tell me I am welcome to help myself to whatever food I want.

I appreciate the generosity on their part - some have even encouraged me and provided me w/their food.
If that is the case, then I graciously accept.

Most of the time I just prefer to bring my own meals.
It’s just a hang-up of mine.
I feel weird eating other people’s food.
No logic, I know.

And when I DO choose to eat something at my employer’s home, I ALWAYS make sure I do not finish it.
For example, I won’t drink the last bottled water or eat the last banana of the bunch.

I am a nanny and my employers have always provided lunch for me. It is commonly done because it is not like a nanny can run out and grab lunch - she is stuck at your house.

LOL you are perfectly capable of bringing a lunch from home, like everyone else who has a job does. Eating out has only become common in the last few years. Before that, people brought food from home...and were healthier for it.

And if you forget your lunch? It has nothing to do with capability. If you cannot leave the work place, the meal is generally provided in most good positions - I know it is true in my office. And in DH's hospital (the cafeteria) when they are on call.

Are you a teen kid that needs to eat constantly or you are starving? You never go out on walks or drive and can grab a quick snack and there is nothing to eat in the house? You may be special but grow up already. I can't believe you don't know most people atleast here in US can go about just fine without lunch for a day!

Calm down, PP. So your vote is no, you do not provide lunch for your nanny. Thanks for sharing.

Now go take your meds and get off the internet.
