Advice to nannies: RSS feed

There's at least 1 post a day of a nanny complaining that their boss is asking/making them work extra hours or stay late, or work a weekend, or pick them up from airport, etc.
When you are asked: DON'T JUST SAY YES AUTOMATICALLY. Instead pause for a second and say, LET ME CHECK MY CALENDAR AND GET BACK TO YOU.
Don't let your employers put you on the spot and then regret it later. Take control of the situation. Don't let anyone force you into a decision or answer on the spot.

I do this because I actually have to check my calendar. As an employee I am highly flexible, but I’m also an adult with other obligations.

You are absolutely right. I have learned the hard way!

Omg yes! I always do this. Usually for weekend baby-sitting. I have to decide whether or not I’m willing to sacrifice my weekend and I can’t do that in the moment

I think you make a good point, but most people's calendar is on their phone now so it makes it hard to do that. They just say well, where's your phone?

I say this all the time to MB and and last time she got irritated. she told me if I didn't want to do something then I should just say no. I told her its not that I don't want to, but as an adult who's also a student with responsibilities, I have to double check my schedule and think about whether or not I want to commit to something. a lot of times I might have a paper due, an exam, a study group etc. I have 5 classes and can't always keep track of everything.

Well my parents always ask me via email or text so I always have time to think! It I definitely say no, when I need a break and they always understand.

I started saying, "I might have something that day/night - let me confirm with ______ and I'll let you know".

I learned the hard way.
