Protocol for snow days/federal holidays for part time nanny pay RSS feed

Hello:
Need advice as we are new to hiring a nanny. We have set up a part-time arrangement with our nanny- 5 days/week, 6 hour day. What is the norm for pay when it comes to snow days and federal holidays or even days we want to take vacation? Thank you.

5 days a week is amost full time even though you are only using 6 hours a day. You need to pay her for snow days. The big holidays should be paid, smaller ones you can negotiate. I would probably have her work the smaller ones. If you are off then have some time to run errands or do your own thing.
offer 10 days a year PTO. 5 days of your choosing and 5 days of her choosing.

Ok, thank you. Definitely want to be fair. Our situation is tricky as right now I'm working as a part time contractor so days off for me are unpaid but understand that I should still pay her.
Starting late summer she'll be ending her other job and moving to full-time with us and I'll then move to fulltime as well. So, short term issue. I'll pay her as suggested. Thank you.

You also want to guarantee her hours. That means if you take vacation, she can come in and do a few things (collect mail, make sure kid laundry is done, switch seasonal clothes, reorganize playroom), but she gets paid for all hours, regardless of how long the tasks take. Depending on the situation, she may even shop for you.

Guarantee hours doesnt always mean that you do extra work if family takes a vacation. It means you pay her if you take a vacation or not. We just took a week vacation last week. We still paid our nanny, she stayed home. So whatever she did with her time was her business. I'm not going to give her extra work because we took the children on a vacation.

Make sure you follow OPM guidelines and not school guidelines for closure otherwise you'll be paying her for a ton of days not worked.

We pay our PT nanny for snow days, holidays that fall on one of her workdays, and give her 2 weeks PTO. Oh, and we also pay he when we go on vacation, or otherwise cancel on her (sick kid, etc.)

That depends. Strict OPM would not work for us since I own a small car and am not confident about driving in hazardous conditions. Also depends on your neighborhood roads, and hers.

You pay her for snow days, federal holidays and when you go on vacation. Not hard to figure out, OP. Guaranteed hours means the hours as well as the time/days of those hours is guaranteed. She makes herself available to you on those hours and days and you pay for it.

OP here. You’re message is rude and condescending.
We haven’t talked about guaranteed hours yet and she’s left early on me some days for her other afternoon job. I have a flex situation right now and have been ok with her leaving when the other kid has off of school and their parents want more hours. I wasn’t sure if I should be setting this up more formally with guaranteed hours and paying on snow/fed/vacation days. Sorry for asking for advice...

OP here. Thanks for sharing. We will set this up with her. We really enjoy her and want to make sure we are being fair.

I am a nanny... I can’t do the big tasks when the kids are home, that’s why I use their vacations...

I am sorry you asked, too. How self-centered are you? Why do you think your situation is "tricky" - your job has no bearing whatsoever on the hours you promised your nanny. If you let your nanny leave early - fine, That should have any effect on her guaranteed hours.

I also employ a nanny and I am so tired of ridiculous mothers who seem to think their nanny is undeserving of professional consideration.
