I have worked for a very wealthy family for 5.5 years. I work all holidays if it falls on my scheduled work day, or if I travel with them. My MB recently stopped paying OT to my nanny team of 3. We have to take illegal banked hours instead. But she also gets angry when we use those banked hours, she says we are taking advantage of her. I’ve worked all the major holidays this year, and will be working Christmas and New Year’s Day. I want to ask to be paid a holiday rate for when I work major holidays. I want 1.5x or double pay for the day. I never am thanked or acknowledged for working on a holiday. I never get a Merry Christmas or Happy Thanksgiving. I truly think that giving up my family time to work on holidays should be compensated accordingly. This is fair right?
Tell her you want the holidays off or pay. Find a new family to work with. Problem solved. She isn't going to change.
Were you placed thru an agency, OP? If so - report her. Banking hours is against the law. And yes, you have to quit. In the best possible scenario all of the nannies would quit on the same day.
Wait, she's been paying OT up until recently, then just stopped? Was there any explanation? I would never ever change how much I pay our nanny without a conversation.

If the banked hours were negotiated, I would be fine with it, but only if there was no quibbling about when I wanted to use them (minimum of two weeks notice). However, your MB didn't negotiate it, and she's also accusing you of taking advantage?
Did you negotiate for holidays off? If not, did you negotiate for holiday pay at 1.5 times? It sounds to me like all of the nannies need to negotiate together. You need to let her know that all three of you won't agree to illegal banked hours. At that point, you could all negotiate to do one of two things: switch hours so everyone works one holiday out of three, or you could all negotiate for 1.5 times base for holiday pay if you think she won't agree to holidays off. |
