How much to pay a SAHM who babysits RSS feed

Is $12 per hour reasonable?

You need to give more specifics.

How many kids is she watching total? How many of your kids? Is she watching them full time, or is this more of an occasional thing when you need childcare for an appointment?

About 10 years ago I paid $15/hr to a SAHM who watched 3 or 4 kids. This was just for occasional sitting when I had an appointment, not a regular thing.

Ask her what she is charging!

It would be 2 half days per week for 3 hours or so. She's ok with doing drop in. I don't necessarily have to commit to hours every week. She does want to take care of more children at her house.

Ask her. Only she knows the number she will be happy with. Then you decide if you want to pay it or not.

This is true with every babysitter and nanny on the planet. The "going rate" questions are ridiculous. Negotiate with the person who is interested in your job.

We pay a sahm $10 an hour. She has one child my childs age and an older child.
She watches my DD 8 days a month for 2.5 hours after school. I based the rate on the fact she has her own child my childs age, it is almost like a share situation. If I was paying someone who didnt have their own kids I would pay more.

We also guarantee the pay, so even if I pick up an hour early we pay for the full time, and if we dont need her on a certain day that was prearranged we still pay for that day.

I am also ok with her taking my kid on errands etc or if her older son has to go to his sports activity she takes my kid with her and I may need to pick up DD in a different location because thats where his game is.

If it is only your child + hers, I would say $12/HR is fair and reasonable.

Better ask her and make sure she's not going to feel like you're taking advantage of her. Believe me.

So...SAHM gets $12 but the nannies want $30/hr. Wow.

Oops and I forgot the babysitters who “don’t take less than $20”.

I paid $20 for someone to let my dog out in back yard and play with her once a day. You think taking care of a child is only worth $12/hr. You are crazy.

She's at her house, and it's babysitting, not nannying. $12/hr seems reasonable to me, too. Home daycares for full-time sitting with planned activities run about 250/wk for full-time care. This isn't even that formal, and that comes to about $6/hr.

Much less than minimum wage! She is still taking care of chld when child is awake! No less than $18/hr if you want to keep her. Make it worth her while and do not abuse her good will.

Op here: It seems a bit steep because I can find a babysitter who comes to me for the same price. We live in Florida. The rates are a lot less here.
