| Somehow, our dog got out and was lost for three hours today. Thank God, a neighbor found him and brought him back. Nanny hadn’t noticed he was gone. He’s a very low key dog and has never wandered before so I am kind of at a loss. DH is livid. What would you do? |
| Nannies should not be responsible for pets. If she had lost child for three hours then fire her. Dog? No. Not her problem. |
She should have been responsible enough NOT to have let the dog out of the house. Anyone with half a brain knows you don’t just let a dog out, and if it gets out, it needs to be caught and put back inside. At minimum she should have called OP to let her know. |
| Oh, God - get over it. The damn dog is fine and the nanny doesn't know how he got out. Caring for a dog is NOT her job. |
|
you need to figure out a way to make sure the dog can't get out the door...like a gate that keeps it in a specific area of the house. Some people just aren't pet people and don't know how to manage them. Personally, I'm happy to take on pets as another kid, and often dog sit when my family is out of town, but not everyone is like that. Some people genuinely don't know how to care for and manage a dog.
One question...is there a way your dog could have escaped the backyard when she let it out at some point? |

Nanny here. Indeed it's not her job but she accepted this position and agreed to at least making sure the dog doesn't get out and to make walk it twice a day to make its business ...
I'd let it go but ask her to be more careful next time. |
| OP here. To be clear, it’s not her job to do anything at all pertaining to the dog. She doesn’t let him out or walk him. He generally sleeps on the couch and doesn’t bother her or anyone else. |
If it is not her job to do anything pertaining to the dog, why would she even notice that he was gone? Seriously, OP - you and your husband are drama queens. Make sure YOU find a safe location for the dog to spend is days and apologize to the nanny for being "livid". |

Options:
Train your dog. Ask nanny to lock dog in basement or other safe room. Fire the nanny. Let someone "resucue" your dog. |
Then why are you blaming her? Blame your stupid dog or your own stupidity for not enclosing your yard so your dog cannot get out! You and your and your DH are dolts. |
| I'm so surprised at these responses, calling the dog "stupid" - dogs escape if doors are left open for too long, etc. They just want to smell and explore. I would expect anyone in my home, regardless of their responsibilities for my dog, to at least be careful about leaving doors open too long. I don't think this is something to fire an otherwise good nanny over, but I do think you can ask the nanny to be mindful about opening/closing doors, etc. |
| Dogs are wonderful. Anybody who call them "stupid" are trashbags |
This. |
This. Also, whether or not the nanny expressed any concern or remorse over this happening would matter to me. |
|
I would be livid. I love my dog more than I love my kids.
Our nanny is asked to make sure the dog does not leave when people go in or out, and to keep the water bowl filled (we fill it before we leave for work), especially on hot days. That is not too much to ask. |
