Going rate for nanny for overnight/weekend RSS feed

Anonymous

We live in DC and have a 9 month old and a 3 year old. We have a wonderful nanny (part time, live out) we would like to ask to stay overnight for two nights to care for our kids in our home while we are out of town. She has a young child she would bring with her. Her normal hourly rate is $20. Both kids sleep a solid 11 hours at night (I just mention this to note there are no nighttime feedings/wakings). We would like to find a mutually agreeable flat rate for overnight or for the weekend (Friday evening to Sunday evening). I know there will be variance, but would welcome guidance! Thanks in advance.

At least $100 on top of her usual daytime pay. Being away from home, regardless of how well the kids sleep, is work. And especially in your case where your nanny is dragging a young child along.

I would charge $20 for all awake hours. so 7-10pm I would charge $20 an hour and then I would charge $80-$120 for sleeping hours.

That adds up to around $800.

Good lord you are inconveniencing her and her child! Why are you haggling? You pay her OT, $30/hr for every hour-- awake or asleep--plus a $250 bonus. She is doing you a HUGE favor.

ASK HER!

I charge normal rate (or make sure overtime if her hours exceed 25-30) for awake hours + $100 fee for sleeping over + $.50/mile driven.

Our nanny has a flat "travel rate" of $350 a day (24 hour period) that she will use when she travels with us or when she stays over at our home to care for DD.

That's pretty low for 24 hrs. You're lucky!

Super helpful attitude. How is she haggling? She said she wants to find a mutually agreeable rate and asked for guidance. That's all.

First you ask her. Then we can discuss the fairness (or unfairness) of her rates, determined by her value to you.

Yes, it costs me about $1000 for the sitter when I go away for two nights. It's why we don't do it often. Plus another $200 for food, gas, outings, etc.

I am lucky in many ways to have this wonderful nanny.

I'd give her a thank you note or email on a regular basis. Mention something specific you appreciate.

I would pay $150 for Friday night, $300 for Saturday and $150 for Sunday. I would still ask her if she has a "weekend" rate or set amount for the weekend. Maybe also leave extra money for her to eat and or go grocery shopping and stock up on food/snacks for the weekend.
