| How much would it cost to hire a nanny to watch an infant full time (8am-5pm Mon-Fri) in the DC area (we live in Bethesda)? Do you pay them hourly or weekly? We've only done daycare in the past so hiring a nanny is a whole new thing for our infant that's coming soon. |
| Would you consider an Au pair? |
|
Nannies are hourly employees by law.
One rate for the first 40 hours, time and a half after 40. Depending on what you want in terms on experience and nanny duties, $16-18 for the first 40 and time and a half after that. |

Au pairs are great. You can make them work all sorts of hours and pay them less then minimum wage (legally)
They never complain and if they do the agency will defend you. |
I would do much higher in hourly wage to get a more educated and experienced nanny who can keep your baby engaged. We pay our nanny (NWDC) $27 an hour. She has a degree in education and was a preschool teacher with over 10 years experience as a nanny and brilliant references from all her former families. She is also American. |
We hired someone with zero nanny experience and no college degree and paid $15 an hour to start. Five years later the person is still with us, we have given yearly raises, added a second child, and both are thriving. I don't think paying $27 an hour is necessary. |
| We are in Chevy Chase, MD. We pay our nanny $22, when she started. She has been working with us for three years. We are having another child October of this year. We will offer her $27, she is now making $25. She has 15+ years of experience. I don't think it's ok if we pay our nanny $15-$20 when she has 15+ years of experience. |
Are you f'ing kidding me? What a sorry, low way to speak about the people who takes care of your children. |
You are the reason why this program of indentured servitude should be stopped and you should be put in jail. |
I do think it is necessary. I wanted a teacher for my child and not a babysitter. |
An educated nanny with years of experience is the gold standard. |
I may sure she's being sarcastic. She is probably an uneducated nanny who is mad that she's not being paid as a professional. There is a difference between then and than. If you can't teach that to a child then you dont get paid top dollar. |

If a nanny has experience as a a nanny or teacher, I would say start of around $16-18. If there is housekeeping work (laundry, cleaning babies room etc) I would say $20 an hour. Please remember that ANYTHING over 40 hour is time and a half (1.5* hourly rate)! If your nanny has proven herself to be a great fit, I would encourage annually raises. If an additional child comes into the family, add $2-5 to he/she's hourly rate.
