Overnight travel pay

I am negotiating a contract with a new family. They are paying well and have already added some additional requests. They also may want me to travel with them and plan to pay my normal wage, my travel expenses, and any additional time worked. I requested that they add overnight pay of $50-100 and they thought that was a bit much. It's a great job with great pay and benefits so I don't want to be pushy, especially because I've already made additional requests, but this is a very standard request. I personally have zero interest in traveling with the family, except maybe to Paris! I think most families think traveling with them is a luxury. . . Not so much! I am willing to travel, but would much rather keep my salary and stay home! What does your contract say about travel pay? How can I respond without sounding too demanding?

Chances are they will pick someone who does require $0 overnight pay ... if you like the job let it go and maybe ask for extra time off instead ? Everybody could be happy with that situation ...

I always say this. A family who can afford to pay travel expenses and hotel accommodations for a nanny to go with them on vacation can pay her premium. I think if you feel you deserve night wage stay on your demandes. You could also ask for a few extra dollars added to your regular wage and leave the night out. Who knows maybe the kids sleep through the night.

I am at $27 an hour and negotiated $350 a day in travel pay, paid in cash (no deductions). My normal daily gross is $270 so $350 with no deductions comes out to about $130 - 140 more per day . My employers thought it was fair.

It is never a vacation to travel for work.

This! I have NEVER traveled with a family and not had it be work!

Going on vacation w/a family is only a vacation for them!!

Nanny cannot sleep whenever she desires nor can she make her own schedule.

If they are already being generous then you'll have to think about whether you want to push it and risk losing the job. Negotiating compensation is always just that, a negotiation. As a MB, who hates business travel, I wish my employer would pay me extra for when i have to travel away from home for work, but sadly, that isn't the case, although, like your employers are offering, my employer does pay me for the hours I work while on travel plus my incidental travel expenses. Seems fair.

They said they'd pay hourly for additional work hours.

I think they will probably advertise for a travel nanny; that is, someone who actually wants to do this. They probably feel like whatever premium they're paying in OP's hourly wage in the new contract covers the additional inconvenience to her.

OP, do you lose the job if you refuse the travel?
