will you work for anti-vaccine parents? RSS feed

just asking if there is any pro and con working with anti-vaccine parents.

I do. Nothing wrong with them, they are just trying to protect their kids. I've had all my childhood vaccinations but I no longer believe in them and have not have a flu shot or any other such thing for 20 years. I'm incredibly healthy and I've worked with a ton of children.

Nope. I think you're failing to have missed vaccines is a moral issue. There are a lot of people out there who cannot have vaccines (newborns, those with compromised immune systems, with allergies to certain vaccine ingredients), and those people rely on herd immunity. This means that a high enough percentage of the general population is vaccinated that a disease can't become widespread, and therefore they are unlikely to encounter it and are likely to be safe simply because they live in a well vaccinated community. When you refuse to vaccinate your child, you are stating that you feel that it is more important that your child avoid the imagined complications associated with vaccines than for this population of people who cannot vaccinate to be safe. There are some documented side effects from vaccines, but the vast majority of people have no side effects, and the side effects that do exist are almost always very mild.

It is also a risk to my health, because vaccines are medicine, not magic. So having had them as a child does not protect me if my body happens to be one that can still catch a certain illness in spite of having been vaccinated. Every body is different and there is no way to know without running into a disease how immune a given person is. If an epidemic is going to start, it is going to start with people who are not vaccinated, which means that I will be on the front row to actually encounter that illness in full force. If there is any chink in my immunity armor then I could also become ill.

I am actually pretty crunchy in most regards, and if a family said that they were going to have titers drawn after an initial vaccine rather than getting multiple booster shots just to be safe, then I would be 100% on board with that. It is the families who feel that vaccines are some sort of conspiracy who have obviously not done their "research" based on any reputable well-run studies. The science is consistent.

I would but the one family I have interviewed with that was anti vax was not ok that I had my shots as a child. Not sure how vaccines I had 20 years ago could hurt their kids but the mom said it was a deal breaker for her.

No, of course not. That kind of ignorance would permeate other aspects of the job.

That's truly nuts. Were they never planning to leave the house?

No, nor would I hire a nanny who is anti-vaccine.

I agree with 5:39.

Yes, I would.

Yes, and I did for six years

I would not exclude them, but it would be a red flag that they are probably crazy. A correlation thing. Id proceed with caution. Parents who think they know more thsn proven science are a problem. That kind of ignorancenoften permeates their entire lives.

No-I often do date-night sitting for a family with a special needs child who is immune-compromised, so I specifically ask about vaccinations when I interview.

No. I am sick of these anti-vaxers who think they are more qualified that an MB and doctors who research. I am so done with parents listening to celebrities telling them vaccines cause Autism. The theory has been debunked, and Autism has already been shown that Autism is started in the womb. I would not be able to bring a child that is not vaccinated in a group for fear of exposing him to things, and other children who are too young to have certain vaccines. Thanks to all the anti-vaxers, we are bringing back measles, whopping cough, and rubella in large amounts. We will hit a large plague soon.

Don't care if they don't get the flu vaccine. Know some people who don't do the varicella vaccine either. No issue with these. But a true anti vaxer I would not work for. Only work for families who have similar philosophies as me and I'm lucky that I can afford to be picky.

No, never!!! Who would ever want to work for stupid people?
Anonymous
Never, of course not. People who don't believe in vaccines are part of a very willfully ignorant fringe group. Theyre okay with endangering children in order to feel like they're making a special choice. I would never work for that kind of person.
