How did you find your amazing nanny? RSS feed

We're are new to this idea of using a nanny having never had one ourselves as children. We're wondering how we can find a responsible, caring and stimulating nanny for our baby and preschooler. Did others use websites, agencies, listserv, referrals, churches, university job boards or something else? We would really like to know how we can find the best pool of applicants. Thanks!

Through an agency. We tried word of mouth and found some very experienced people, but the person we clicked with and have worked exclusively with for almost five years came from an agency.

Care.com. I read her profile and contacted her - she did not apply for the job as we were outside her search area. I was still pregnant and we offered her a signing bonus as well as a gas stipend (and a top hourly wage, of course). She has been fantastic and my daughter adores her.

Also, OP, set out to find a college graduate with preschool teaching experience. Make your needs known clearly if you are placing an ad yourself. Also make sure the applicant has CPR certification and tdap vaccination proof.

If you don't mind me asking, what agency did you use and would you reccommend them?

Other parents - specifically Moms, and especially mothers who work FT outside the home (like me). Their referrals are always head and shoulders above any candidates I find elsewhere.

Use your neighborhood listserv, any parent groups or civic groups like churches/synagogues, word of mouth, etc...

Our nanny has been with us for almost 8 years. We found her on craigs list. Wouldn't do that now!

Helpful hint: when attempting to post a witty slam, take a second to check your spelling.

Agency just takes your money and they don't get the job done.. The agency we used never even did a background check on the nannies.
