Would you feel uncomfortable with your nanny buying your child several presents for Christmas and spending a fair bit of money on them?

Yes. Mine does it anyway. I've spoken to her about it, she says she loves to do it, and now, on year three, I have given up and just tried to be appreciative. I said, "I wish you wouldn't spend your money on us!" once this year, and let it drop.

I am a Nanny & do this for my charges because it makes ME happy to give them these gifts.

I would be hurt if their parents ever forbade me from doing so.

Nanny here. I spend all day with my charges 5 days a week. I care about them. I also am professionally interested in products for kids and am pretty picky about which items are high-quality and which aren't. For birthdays and holidays I like to get something that I feel good about for the kids I care about. This is just one of those ways that the nanny/boss relationship is different from other employee/employer relationships.

No. We get our nanny several gifts and give her a two week bonus. It is so sweet that she gives gifts to my kids. she

Yes, and he doesn't. He takes them both ice skating and then buys them each a book. Usually makes a few dozen cookies with them and takes them to give most away.

Precisely! I spend what I feel comfortable spending to get my charges quality toys and books. I have had one employer question how much I spent when I got more than they had expected, but i was able to produce receipts that showed clearance prices for packs of wonderful items, and I showed her that I was holding some back for the upcoming birthday and special treats, so she was fine with it.
