Help your nannies and babysitters vote!

Those of you who employ nannies or babysitters might want to think about how you can help them vote -- whether it's giving them extra time on Tuesday or, if there are language barriers, helping to research the information about their local polling places, etc.

How is that an employer's responsibility?

PP here - I talked with our nanny about when she wanted to vote, told her it was ok if she wanted to come in a little late that morning, etc...

She ended up doing early voting (as had I) which made life easier, but i would have found a way to carve out time for her to vote during the day if need be.

I feel that's part of my civic duty as a citizen and an employer.

+1 to early voting - no need to wait for Election Day (and the lines that will ensue).

Depending on your jurisdiction (and languages covered under the Voting Rights Act for said jurisdiction), foreign language materials may be available at the polling place, too, because this is a federal election.

In the alternative, someone who does not speak English (or otherwise requires assistance with the ballot) is permitted, under the Voting Rights Act because this is a federal election, to be accompanied by an assistor of choice (into the polling place and booth).

Nanny informed us that she was going to be late during our primary election and that she would be late next Tuesday. No need to remind or translate for a grown up.

It's just a kindness, that's all; hope you don't object to such an idea.

My nanny is a new citizen and first-time voter. The process can be intimidating, and a lot of very conscientious nannies are concerned about being late for work or whatever.

I am going to be at my polling place at 6:00 when It opens. I will have plenty of time to have a cuppa after and make it to work. If you have to give your nanny extra time to vote maybe you are working her/him too much.

Fantastic, glad to hear that you are so much more organized and together than I am. I will probably be a little late to work, personally, and I know my employer will be tolerant of that -- so, just paying it forward. I didn't think this would be a controversial suggestion and I apologize for that.

When I was a nanny, I used to take my charges with me to vote, but we lived in the same neighborhood so it was close by. They had fun with it and got a sticker.
