Upper age limit for kids in nanny share? RSS feed

Our daughter is turning 2 soon and in a nanny share with another girl around the same age. We're really happy with the whole arrangement, but I'm wondering what we should do a year from now. Is there a reason to move her out of a nanny share at a particular age? Is daycare a better option at that age in terms of development, or can we wait until pre-K?

How is a share different from regular nanny care in this regard?

A lot of people switch to daycare for the cost factor, or because the daycare schedule works better for them, or because they're tired of being nanny employers or dealing with the other share family.

Lots of people stick with nanny care and do a part time preschool a few days a week. That's what I've done.

If you are happy I would keep doing what youre doing. Talk to the other family and see if maybe when the kids are 3 they can go to the same preschool a couple of days a week. Or when they are 4 if you dont want to start at 3. Its not necessary at 3 but I would recommend doing at least a year of some type of preschool the year before K

Thanks, that's a good idea about trying preschool a few days a week with the other family. In our case, that would probably have to be on top of the full-time nanny, which may not be that great in terms of cost.

It's not. Nothing about nanny care is cheap. I am currently paying 1 full-time nanny, 2 part-time pre-school tuitions, 1 private elementary school tuition, and assorted extra-curriculars (3 gymnastics classes, two dance classes, two music together tuitions, 1 violin class, 1 robotics class, 1 flag football). And we make under 200K/yr. I have four kids, though, and the nanny has been invaluable for all the various permutations of drop off, pick up, nap, etc..

It's only for a brief time, though, especially if you only have one child.

You made your bed, and you continue to make dumb decisions buying things you can't afford.

We're doing just fine, thank you! Lots of savings from selling a couple of DMV homes just before the 2008 crash.
