Would you rehire a nanny you fired? RSS feed

We a fired a new nanny for cause last week. She was with us 3 weeks and missed 8 days for being sick and and a family emergency. We liked her and she was great with our child but we feared reliability issues. She also called out last minute and was late most of the days she did work. She then threatened us with small claims court because we took a day of not getting back to her about her paycheck. She emailed us apologizing and asking for a second chance. We do like her and haven't been able to find a suitable replacement. Would you rehire or keep looking?

No.

You fired her for a reason, for a GOOD reason. Do not second guess yourself, and don't presume that anything would be different the second time around.

Not to mention, would you feel great about going back to a job from which you had been fired? No. You can never repair that kind of damage.

Throw money at the solution if you can - at least for the short term. Use an agency for immediate coverage and take plenty of time to find a replacement.

Good luck!!

Absolutely not.

Even though you may have liked her as a person, as an employee she was just terrible overall.
Reliability is crucial when employing a Nanny & this person had total disregard for this.

And then to threaten to take you to court.....??!
No way!!

Keep looking for someone.
Your dream Nanny is out there!
Keep the faith.

You liked her at the interview too, remember. She's a nice person, but she's not a reliable employee.

Your nanny actually posted about the situation on this website a few days ago. Shame on you for not paying her. She is crazy for begging you for the job. That will be a toxic environment imo.

OP of the nanny post. This is not my MB. You are incorrect.

No. For two reasons.

1. Unreliability
2. She threatened to sue you.

She's great with your kids ... when she happens to show up to work with them.

No, because you aren't a good fit for her and cannot be remotely flexible. You should not have fired her in the first place.

Did she have reliability issues with previous employers? Missing work because she was sick may have been bad luck, but being late is just bad planning and with childcare, that would be a difficult hump to get over if I were considering rehiring her. Never say never. Just know it's a little bit like going back to an ex; you can't undo what has been done.

OP here. We asked her to come back and she turned us down. We will keep looking.
