How much severance for nanny employed less than 1 year? RSS feed

I heard 1 week of severance for every year of service is standard. Our nanny has been with us for nine months, but 1 week of severance sounds paltry. Would that be standard?

If you can give her a long notice period, then 1 week of severance is more than reasonable.

If you can't give her any notice, she should get 2 weeks of severance to make up for the standard notice period.

The "1 week per year" thing is called severance, but it's really more like a bonus for lengthy service. In your case, you are talking about real severance, that is to be used to help her transition to another job.

Don't forget that she will also be eligible for unemployment, which will also help her during the time she is looking.

The nicest family I worked for gave me two months. Price they were moving then a month severance after they moved. I had been with them 11 months. They also gave me a nice card and $100 visa gift card. It was I expected and far more generous than any other family I worked for and I'll never forget it.

Three fourths of a week is appropriate since she worked three fourths of a year.
