1 week notice RSS feed

The parents called me last night to let me know the dad lost his job on Friday. They said they can give me a 1 week notice and pay me full that week but, after that they can keep me 1-2 days and pay me less....I can't afford that. Also, our contract says each of us have to give a months notice. How do I handle this?

It's a tragedy all around.

You might have to dip into your emergency savings account but you'll find a job in a couple of weeks. I had to sting together part-time gigs for a month last time I was let go. You can do this

Get off here and look for a job. Your job was dependent on the parents having a job. If one loses their job, its a big issue. Its a huge transition time, hopefully you will find something soon. File for unemployment.

MB here - it is tragic all around. Contracts don't account for these extraordinary circumstances. Just move on...

Perfect example of how these so-called contracts are totally unenforceable.

Don't listen to these mbs saying just move on. Of course all jobs depend on the employers having an income coming in also, being a nanny is no different. Your livelihood depended on it. Please go to your local department of labor and file for unemployment. Their circumstances are very unfortunate but it doesn't excuse them from their responsibilities as an employer. If you can't file sue for unemployment. But still look for another position at the same time.

Good luck!

Pp here and by sue I mean if they contest your claim fight for it. They don't pay you unemployment themselves anyway to be clear

Your contract is enforceable but the month's notice was for normal termination. I assume your contract says nothing about if one party loses their job? Feel for you but this guy lost his job, come on. Move on.

Considering the Father lost his job suddenly, I wouldn't try to argue w/them that you weren't given adequate notice.

This is a very unique, one of a kind situations where they literally had zero choice but to slash your hours so drastically.

If you are being paid on-the-books, I would try to file for unemployment benefits.

Also begin actively searching for a brand new family to work for.

And let the termination money issue go.

Have a heart & understand this is just a tough time all around.

Actually they do. Our nanny is paid $18/hr. We have 3k set aside in a completely separate account that will be given direct to her if something unexpected happens, like a layoff. She relies on me to pay her bills and I have a contract that I need to PLAN to be able to uphold if the unexpected happens. The lack of business acumen and basic professionalism some parents (and nannies) exhibit on these boards is astonishing.
