Cost of live-in nanny vs Au Pair RSS feed

Hi -- we currently have a nanny but are considering going the Au Pair or Live-in Nanny path with baby #3 on the way. The Au Pair costs are pretty straight forward but I can't seem to figure out the costs for a live-in nanny. If we provided housing, how do we figure out what to compensate for salary? It certainly wouldn't be the same as our current nanny. Would it be fair to offer the same rate as current nanny minus a slightly under market rental cost for our english basement?

If anyone knows of another discussion that laid out suggested salary + housing please share!

Thanks!

Living with your boss is a hardship so frankly I'd want the same pay. Or more.

Most families take off a few dollars per hour but it's not a bargain or an aupair salary. I think the lowest you can go is around $500/week.

Ps. You can't charge a nanny rent, that's nuts!!

Live in nannies typically make 10-15 per hr.

There is a specific federal law that addresses the maximum deduction employers can take weekly for room and board. I will try to find that info, but I believe the max was around $130/week.

So no, you cannot require a nanny actual rent to live with you for your convenience. You might pay $2/hour less than you would pay her as a live out, but that is as far as you can go.

So $14/hour for 50 hours/week would be $700 gross unless you live somewhere that requires you to pay a LI overtime. If you include your employer expenses, a LI Nanny may cost around 40K a year. Of course, if the applicants are unsatisfactory when you offer $14, you'll have to up the wages.

An AP costs about 28K/year, but you might have a hard time finding one who is infant qualified and willing to care for 3 kids.

We have school aged kids and only need AuPair type hours. We pay a flat $400/wk, 52 weeks a year. School year, hours are 20/wk, summer can be 40hrs if thr kids are not in camp. We also pay health insurance and supply a car.

We did have an AP for 2 years and wasn't worth the hassle. No way would I host one for infants or toddlers. No way in hell.

^^oh and I might add that our live in has about 3hrs a day on thr clock without kids, so she does grocery shopping, laundry, straightening, and basic meal prep.
