My family is taking 1.5 weeks off in July and then one week in August. They also took 2 weeks off around Christmas time. I am always paid my 40 hours each of those weeks.
I'd like to take the last week of August off. I do get to choose one week. What should I do? Just make plans and tell them that date?

If your contract doesn't say how much advance notice is necessary, then please at least be reasonable. Tell them now, not a month from now.

Yes, but it would be more courteous to tell them that you'd like that week off before you actually make plans. At most jobs employees have to submit a vacation request to the boss, not just a notification. If for example, it's the first week of school that might make things difficult for them - I know at my job that requesting a week off during a crunch time might not be approved.

With our nanny I've always said yes to any request, but it's nicer to be asked if it's ok first rather than just flat out told "I'm not going to be here from x-y dates".

What's wrong with scheduling it when they are gone?

Do you have something you have to do or attend on a certain date?
Otherwise you run the risk of looking like one of those nannies who sits back and waits for the family to announce their family and holiday vacations and then purposely pick something next to it or different week.

Just have a reason. It's not about having 5 weeks of a year versus 6 weeks, nannying is a give/take relationship on both sides.

For me, the issue isn't that you chose another week. It's that they were just gone for 2.5 weeks. That means no time to get back into the new routine.

That said, if you give them ample notice, I'm sure they'll figure it out.

You are crazy. She is entitled to be week of HER CHOICE. Also, 99.99 percent of nannies give and employers take.

More power to OP, but if I gave nanny 3 weeks off with pay over 2 months and then she said she wants to take her "vacation" week right after I would just use that time to find a new nanny and not ask her to return.

Request it now.
I manage several employees at work and they have to "request" that time off. If they ask well in advance, they will probably get that week off, because I have more time to reschedule around it.

I get to choose my vacation because my employer doesn't give me 3 weeks off in July and August with pay. If they did I would take vacation then.
