Today is my last day after working with my family a little over a year. I was given 4 weeks not e but wasn't offered any severance at all. I'm hurt a little but per the contract it's either notice or time paid out in severance. The question now that I have is since I unfortunately live pay check to paycheck am I able to file unemployment and how does that work? Thanks all for the advice

yes you're probably eligible. As for how it works, google it for your state/city. You'll probably have to go to an employment office to fill out some paperwork, and in my state you have to go back a few times for job search seminars/help in order to collect it. You may be able to get SNAP benefits temporarily as well which will help with groceries until you line something else up.

On that note, I'd be looking like mad to find something else right now. Shares, networking, all the regular sites, craigslist etc.

Four weeks should be plenty of time to line another position up. I would focus on that rather than unemployment; it will be significantly less than you are making now and you may not even qualify.

I've been looking and interviewing these 4 weeks and haven't found anything yet. I've placed an ad here with very little responses and have been on care.com as well. I'm hopeful that I may have something within the next week or two, if not I will just go back to work in the school.

Sounds like your employers were completely fair in honoring your contract, and giving ample notice.

It's too bad they didn't give you additional severance, but perhaps you weren't that good a fit in the first place if the job only lasted a year.

Did they give you a reason for letting you go?

If you file for unemployment you will have to disclose the reason for termination, and the notice given. Your former employers will be contacted to confirm any details before any benefits are awarded. (Just worth knowing before you file if there is a likelihood of benefits being denied due to termination for cause.)

Make sure you make this attitude clear to the folks at the unemployment office.
