Overnight Rate? RSS feed

Good Morning Everyone,

I work for a wonderful family in the DC area. They pay me $17/h for taking care of an infant. Today for the first time, my employers asked me if I could work next Friday night (after my daytime shift) from 8pm to 2am, because they will be attending an event. The baby usually falls asleep around 9pm. I am not really sure what rate to charge between the hours of 9pm and 2am. Suggestions and advices are welcome. They gave me a room and allow me to spend the night there in case if they come back home later than 2am or if I don't feel like driving myself home. They are really nice people. Although, we never discussed overnight rate, I want to be fair with them.

Thank you!

I'm a MB here, and, to give perspective, we pay $50 for 8 overnight hours (based on when nanny sleeps, not when child sleeps) That's based on the assumption the sleep pay is just for inconvienance only because the nanny will actually be able to sleep the full 8 hours.

However, in your situation, considering the parents will be arriving home at 2am and it's an infant (i.e. High likelihood of night wake ups ) I think your regular rate until parents arrive home is more than fair. (Whether that be straight $17/hr or OT)

I agree with this.

Anything after 40 hours a week is time and a half. The above posters are either ignorant of the law, or outright dishonest.

I would pay your normal hourly rate (with OT, if applicable ) but I believe that your time is as valuable to you as mine is to me. If you are on OT, then your hourly OT rate from time you begin until they come home.

As an MB, I would expect to pay you $17/hr.

Uhhh this is babysitting so $17/hr obviously. Overnight rates only apply when the parents go out of town.

How is $17/hr legal if she already put in 40 hours?
Hoping you don't get reported?

If your MB didn't discuss a new rate with you when she asked, it is pretty much going to stay the same rate most likely.

That's what I would assume anyway.

You aren't so smart, are you?

This isn't really an overnight. It is late night sitting. I would expect the same $17/hr. No more, because the kid will be sleeping, but no less, since you'll be up till 2 presumably.

I wonder if the same person is posting all the hateful comments. I think so bc none of them make sense.

OP, I agree with all the others. This is late night sitting, not a situation that gets an overnight rate. Did your employers mention a different rate? Did you? Is there any reason to think they do not plan to pay you your hourly rate?

MB here- agree on late night sitting at your normal rate. (maybe capped at $100, if it goes later than 2am and you actually do sleep over, but don't offer that at first, stick to hourly rate)
