Part-time nanny (15 hrs/wk) - on or off the books

I am looking to hire a part-time nanny for 15 hours a week (3 hr/day, M-F). WOndering if other people have been in this situation and if so, did you file tax form and hire them as a legal employee, or did you pay them off the books? What was their gross pay? What are the pros/cons?

What caliber are you looking for and at what price range?

I have done this.

If you can swing 4 hours a day, or can make your 3 hours during school hours only, you'll find it easier to find someone.

I always pay on the books and carry worker's comp. If you want an active grownup who can work independently, it will be $15-$20/hr. But, to be worth anyone's while, the total per day needs to be worth the commute.

I did a job similar for after school pick up ect while in college and was paid $20/hr gross. Family home and kids school no more than 5 miles away. Being out of college now, I can not actually accept a job unless it is a minimum 20 hours and even then, I would have to charge $22/hr, otherwise nothing under 30 hours per week.

I took a position like this during grad school. After school pick-up, school was 5 minutes from home, we hung out for 2-3 hours in the evening (snack, homework, play...I'd empty the dishwasher or switch over laundry on occasion, but only if I felt so inclined).
I was paid $15/hr cash and all parties were ok with the arrangement. I would have charged $20/hr on the books to make it worth my time so cash worked for all involved. Flame away...

I don't take positions off the books, but I also don't take positions that are so part-time, so I'm not sure. I think it would depend on salary per month and quarter.

I pay taxes on the income from my full time job. But I preferred to be payed in cash for my part time jobs.

Most domestics are still paid off the books.

I try to get paid off the books as often as possible. For this job I would not accept on the books, it just wouldn't be worth it.

Doesn't it depend on how much you get paid? Maybe $19 vs. $22?

I get more than $22 hourly right now off the books, I wouldn't go backwards.
