Snow is Coming! RSS feed

By now, you all have heard snow is coming this weekend. I am a week live - in nanny so on Fridays, I go home. Well, the mid-Atlantic will be hit the hardest this Friday and i would prefer not to spend my weekend at work because I am stuck. We are all aware of how inaccurate the news are, but I'd like to be prepared, should I request to take Friday off or ask to leave work early on Friday? Any advice? What are you all planning to do! Thanks !

I'm planning to tell them today I have an appointment Friday afternoon so I need to leave early. I need to grocery shop and get home and don't time to be stuck late because they're late and then I get stuck and can't make it home

Much too early to make a determination now.
If you can't get home, perhaps your employers can't get home either, right?

Wow. Ok, I would be fine working extra time, and if I'm held over for weather, I'm paid extra. I would be more concerned that the kids had someone with them, and if there was any question in my mind that the parent wouldn't be home? No, I would definitely not be leaving early!

So you can't go shopping tonight? Friday afternoon/evening at the grocery store will be a madhouse. I'm going after work today. Harris Teeter is open 24/7.

Each of you may go shopping when you want.

Unfortunately I can't.. With the money I make by the time I pay a bill and buy enough food for the weekend through Thursday, gas to get to work I'm broke and live paycheck to paycheck

OP HERE, I purchased groceries for my place today since my mom just had hip surgery so I want her to be prepared incase I can't get home Friday night, and the mom I work for is off today. If I can't leave work, I wouldn't get paid extra because technically I'm not working, I'm stranded lol remember, I live here during the week so I have my own room there lol

MB here. Just talk to your employer. I can't imagine not allowing someone to leave before a snowstorm with a recovering relative at home. No need to lie- just tell her.

Just talk to her. Why are you making this into something big. If you cannot talk to your boss about this, you need a new job.

"Hi MB. I just wanted to talk to you about this weekend. I know it is still early and the forecast could change, but I was wpndering if I could take a half day. With my mom still recovering from hip surgery, I worry about being unable to get home and leaving her without any help."

Yes, and some MB/DB will be leaving their jobs early on Friday for the same reason, since THEY don't want to be stuck on the roads of DC for hours not able to get home.

Why lie? Tell them the truth. You can go shopping the day before.

Don't lie about stuff like this. It just builds mistrust.

OP HERE I am not the commenter who said they would lie about having an appt so ppl please stop getting me mixed up with that person! In my post, I specifcally asked what other nannies will tell their employers and that's what that commenter did. My employer is aware of the situation, I will have a better idea wednesday night whether to leave thursday night or friday morning.
