New parents--what is going rate for a full time nanny? RSS feed

We are expecting our first baby and considering hiring a full time nanny for 45-50 hours a week in DC when our baby is 4 months old. What is the going range to pay a nanny for this type of situation? I have seen a range from 16/hour to 25/hour. Is that about right? I want to pay fairly but we are not wealthy people and I am trying to figure out if we can afford one. Thanks.

If you think that $16-20/hour is too steep, look into shares. Most shares would be $18-20/hour to start, so each family pays $9-10/hour.

If you can pay $16-18/hr you will have lots of qualified, experienced, legal applicants.

Congrats on your baby.

Just remember plus taxes - the total is around $3-4k a month for 50 hour a week full time nanny. Shares are around $2k per family at $16-$18 hour.

Why would any qualified nanny accept 16-18 an hour, much less a share (with double the work!)? You obviously have no clue about rates in the Washington area. Most intelligent nannies I know start at $20 for one child, and go up from there. No one here cares how low your standards are. The broken-English workers will accept whatever you give them, as long as it's a job. Congratulations and good luck with your bargain baby sitter.

Most do and most less. OP don't let the troll throw you off. This rate is nearly $50K a year. Most make less.

I get sick of the racist assumption that nannies with poor English skills are inferior caretakers. I like to have my child exposed to Spanish and would rather have a nanny who can offer that new skill than an uppity, monolingual American nanny.

We pay 16/hour to start for one infant with Ot, guaranteed hours, 2 weeks pto guaranteed but more in practice, and no driving requirement. Contract stipulates yearly raises.

We started out paying $15 on the books (don't forget the overtime for every time over 40 hours). But we were prepared to go up a dollar per year plus an extra dollar when we had a second child.

How much of a raise does it say you'll give every year?

I make $20 pH for 2(50 hours) . One is in school all day, the baby stays with me. I get a bonus every year, and 5% raise.

Nonsense, and trolling on so many levels. For one child in NWDC, $16-18/hr is standard. Shares command more, $18-20/hr, but not because shares are double the work. They aren't. The higher rate reflects the need to accommodate two families. More work, for sure, but not nearly double the work.

Very few nannies make over $20/hr for one child in this area. If this were true, the uneducated PP wouldn't need to insult nannies who work for accepted market wages. She's trolling to artificaily raise wages by insulting professional nannies who understand the market and negotiate accordingly.

Shame on her.
