when should my vacation be paid? RSS feed

last week of course had a holiday. my mbs parents were in town (nightmares) and they brought an older friend with them. I decided that I would go home to be with family which lives a couple hours away for the entire week and that I wanted to use my vacation time for the first 3 days of the week. I told my mb this 2 weeks prior to them arriving. On the last friday before Thanksgiving week I was only paid for that week. Mb didn't mail my check while I was out of town last week and yesterday when I came to work there was no pay for it either. Is it standard to wait and pay vacation on next pay day, the week before the vacation is taken, or immediately once employee returns?

thanks in advance

I don't think there is a standard. If you want to be paid today, just tell your MB that you are going to the bank today and you want to take your check from last week. It only takes a minute to write a check, but she might not be thinking about it on a day she doesn't normally pay you.

You should be paid the same as you are always paid. At the very least you should be paid when you return to work if the payday passed while you were away. In the future get direct deposit, so much easier

I usually get paid through direct depositso this isn't an issue, but my current family is a bit cheap...they pay me by check every 2 weeks, and if for some reason I don't work on my pay day, I have it in my contract that I get paid on the last day of work that week. I see no reason why your pay should wait until after you return. Payment is their responsibility. If they can't do it on time, it should be early not late.

If payday was while you were away, the payment should have been mailed to you while you were away (in which case you might not have received it yet if it was mailed on Friday) or available on Monday. If payday is this week (biweekly), you should be paid this week. I've worked for a family who paid monthly, and he always handed me the check on the last day of the month with the check or debit card, so that I could go pull the next month's budget at the same time that I deposited my check.

It is standard to get paid on your next pay check. There is nothing special about vacation pay that makes it payable in advance.

If they don't usually mail your paycheck, instead they give it to you in person, they may have been hesitant about doing so. You should let them know that in the future, if you aren't going to be there for pay day that they can mail it to you. Honestly, I wouldn't do that since mail can be so unreliable.

MB here - FWIW, in this situation I would have paid in advance on the last worked Friday since I want to make sure that I'm never late in paying and we pay each Friday. I do agree with PP that since you weren't there last week that your MB may just be out of her routine and not thinking about it if it's a day she doesn't normally pay you.

Thanks guys I will mention this to her. Usually when they are the ones leaving and the reason for me not working they pay me in advance before they go. I'm not sure if she is thinking about it with family here and we are planning my charges bday party. Just wanted to hear from you all before I mentioned it and looked unprofessional. When I worked at a school you always received pto on the next check but I'm paid weekly. I'll have her write me a check tonight for last week ?
