How hard is it to find a job? RSS feed

In early December? New to DC but been a nanny for years. I got an offer for a job but it's only short term until the mom quits to stay at home. The position will start on Nov. 9 and the end date is either first or third week in December. I know in my old place it was tough to find a position and had to wait until the the holidays are over.

Remember this is a TEMPORARY job so don't get all crazy when the time is up.

I'm not a nanny, but did do a search for a nanny around this time. My guess is that December would be a pretty difficult time to find a job that starts in December. But looking now for a position that starts in January or February is probably great timing.

I think a lot of mothers who are going back to work would wait out the holidays first and have a nanny start in january (which is exactly what I did.)

Maybe the temp position would give you some income while you're searching for a fulltime job. Seems like it could be a great solution. Also, a new mother might have a network of other new mothers so maybe she could be a resource for you.

Good luck. and welcome to DC!

Almost impossible to find anything in December, just about anywhere. Nobody wants to have a new nanny during the holidays.

It's tough, but if you have a bit of savings, the holidays are a great time to snag babysitting gigs. You could take the temp position and then do lots of weekend babysitting during the rest of december (or do another temp gig for kids out of school for the holidays), then start a longer term position in January.

OP here. I only work with young children. I got another offer today for a gig from mid - Nov until early Feb. I'm also in school and self-pay so going a month without pay isn't an option.

I am not from the D.C. area, so I am not quite sure.

Where I live now (SoCal), it really doesn't matter the time of year, sometimes it takes FOREVER to find work, other times it comes much easier.

However, logically...I would assume that less people would be performing nanny searches so close to the holidays, but you never know.

Anyway OP, I sincerely hope you find something after the New Year. Good luck to you.
