What is the best way to ultimately say to nanny that she needs to be on her phone less?
Every time I see her she is on the phone. She is not on it about 1 out of 10 times.

Schedule a meeting to touch base. Talk about the many things she is doing so well. Talk about any goals you have for the baby/child for the next few months. Ask if she has any thoughts or suggestions about anything. Then say "One thing I'd like to ask is if you could spend less time on your phone. In general I'd prefer if you kept personal calls during your work hours to as brief a number and duration as necessary. Ok?" Then say an additional positive thing about the work she is doing.

Do you keep your personal calls at work the same? Didn't think so.

Don't think you need to be this nice about it. Being on the phone more times than not is a major performance issue and it should be addressed as such.

I had that problem with our nanny. I wasn't nice about it and I haven't caught her again. You're not paying her to play candy crush or text. Also if she has your wifi password. Change it.

I hate to go into this sounding like an old broad, but I know many nannies, many age ranges, etc.

It seems the younger ones in their twenties, tend to regard cell phones as extra limbs. They carry them in their pockets or as close as possible. The constant need to feel connected is a staple of this generation.

A lot of older nannies were not brought up w/cell phones so they remember a life where they could be out and about and no one could get angry at them for not answering their phone. Ahh...The good life.

I would just hire an older nanny if she doesn't change her ways after a warning.

Simplest solution is to provide a work phone and require that her personal phone be left at home.
