Overnight care for teen RSS feed

I need to find someone who can do overnights when i travel. The job would start at 3 pm and continue until 8 am the following morning.

It entails pick up and drop off at school, oversee homework (light), prepare a simple dinner, bedtime, wake up, etc. and ensuring teen walks/feeds dogs at night. Caregiver would feed dogs in the morning but no walking.

How much should i pay for this?

That's 17 hours, I would say at least $200. I think it might be difficult to find someone willing to start at 3:00, is it possible for your teen to be alone for a few hours?

It depends. Do you travel the same days every week/month so that one person can cover it and be able to work the other mornings/afternoons or is a shifting schedule? Do you want one person consistently or are you ok with a random college kid every time you travel? Is the person allowed to leave at 8am and return at 3pm even if your teen is sick or there's no school? These are all things you have to take into account.

IMO, minimum would be $15/hour from 3pm to 10pm and 6am to 8am and a small flat amount (like $50?) for 10pm-6am, so maybe a flat amount of $200 would be fine for a college student who is only doing a night or two and may or may not be available for the next time.

Honestly, this is exactly why some of us do live-in nanny positions. A set salary for the week which is paid whether you travel or not, and you get the flexibility to have the same person available when you want, rather than rotating college kids.

I wish you luck, let us know what you choose to do.

It'd be very expensive. Do you have a friend or neighbor to help you?

Can you get a sitter for after school maybe until 6 and then switch to the overnight person? That may open it up to nannies looking to pick up extra hours or daycare teachers

Does anyone think that I could give away a free room in exchange for a few overnights a month? Private room and bathroom, all utilities including Internet. Is that appealing?

Generally, a room share is worth 5-15 hours a week depending on whether it's a room/bathroom vs an apartment setup with private entrance/kitchenette. However, if your overs nights are scheduled enough that someone could easily hold down a primary job or school schedule, and many of the hours are overnight/off hours, I could see it working.

Excuse me, but I'm the PP you are responding to. I do salary because I want the same check every time, and as long as my salary covers all hours worked and any possible overtime, I don't see how you have an issue. You also need to look up the IRS/Dept of Labor laws for overnights, because OP is allowed to not pay for the 8 hours that the minor would be asleep, as long as the nanny is allowed to get 5 consecutive hours to sleep. BUT... Most nannies won't agree to not be paid for those 8 hours, which is why I suggested a flat rate for sleeping hours.

FYI, I'm a live-in nanny, what I suggested is legal/aboveboard, and nobody would be cheated.

It sounds like an easy job, since there is no feeding, diaper changing or bathing involved. Sounds like you just need someone to supervise and be present.

Perhaps one hundred dollars per shift?

I tried to respond to this insane post but can't even formulate the words to express how delusional you must be PP. It's an 18 hour shift. Period. $100 wouldn't even BEGIN to cover that.

This arrangement is doable, but like someone said it, it will be hard to find someone willing to start at 3pm. Also, do you have the same travelling schedule with the same weekday all the time? That my help. I currently do that kind of overnight babysitting for the family I used to nanny for while I was in college full time. So what I do is pick up the kids at their after school care after I get off work, I just have to pick them up before 6pm. Then get them ready for school and the bus picks them up at 7.20 am, so gives me time to get ready to go to work and the cycle starts over until the parents are back. So if you can't find someone who can do your 3- to overnight, just find an after school care or babysitter, then the overnight person can take over at 6 or 7. I charge $20 for waking hours (so usually 6 pm to 9 pm) then an overnight flat fee of $100 and another 1 hour in the morning. And there are 2 kids 9 and 11. And they sleep through the night. Check on sittercity, care or even here, maybe you can find someone and be ready to spend between $150-200 per day/ overnight.

+ 1 I have almost this exact arrangement. My day job is somewhat flexible, so I can often pick up the kids from school.

OP - where are you located? I'd love to talk with you if you haven't found someone. I would also be open to the room exchange.
I can be reached at eveningnanny@gmail.com

Best of luck to you.

Why does a teenager need an overnight nanny?

Because it's illegal to abandon any minor, it doesn't matter if the minor is only 2 days from turning 18. Additionally, I don't know any 13, 14 or 15 year olds who can drive, do you?
