Part-time...paid for holidays? RSS feed

Ok, I just started a position this week. I had told them in the interview I needed to have guaranteed hours and they said they understood. The mom said it made sense, that I need to live off what I make. Great! I thought it was covered. Now I'm wondering if I should have been more specific before starting...it looks like the other nanny who works for them (I do 3 days for 10 hrs each day, and she does 2 days) wasn't paid for Labor Day. I'm wondering now if I should mention it specifically when it comes up, or if I should ask sooner so it's not awkward...I don't know. I know I should have talked about it before starting, but they seemed totally cool with it so I didn't think it would be a problem. What would you all do?

I wouldn't expect to get holidays when I worked part time.

always, always, always get a written contract.

I have always gotten guaranteed hours, paid holidays and some vacation when working part-time, but it's something you need to go over before starting the position. I love work agreements for that reason as both you and the family knows you are on the exact same page about everything.

You should bring it up as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more awkward it will be.

As a matter of fact, I would type up a one-page list of the expectations you are under the impression were agreed to. Present it to your boss, and say you wanted to make sure you were all on the same page.

Many people assume part-timers don't get holidays, etc. When we had a part-time nanny, we did offer holidays (she did not ask for them). In my opinion it is part of making a two-way commitment, and adding incentive.

Totaly agree with the last post!

If they are guaranteeing your pay each week, it seems you will be paid-- but you may also need to be willing to work on those holidays too if they need you.

Since your Mom Boss is in full agreement that you should be paid for holidays, I would ask her if she had a moment or two.

Then just let her know that you wanted to clarify which specific holidays she meant so you could plan ahead.

This should solve the problem.

Here's the common rule:

When a holiday falls on a regularly scheduled day of work, regular compensation is provided for that holiday.

That is neither common, nor a rule.

Yep. Sounds like you basically agreed to be available every M/W/F unless THEY don't need you. There is no law that says you get holidays off, or at higher pay! That has to be part of the contract. Revisit right away and find out which holidays they are willing to give you.

If you work every Monday, though, I would not expect to end up with every Monday holiday.

Just to update, MB gave me a contract to look over and it didn't mention anything about guaranteed hours, so I mentioned it briefly to her and she put it in "guaranteed 30 hours paid per week"...so it looks like we should be fine I totally agree if I worked Monday's it would be a little much- but I don't work Monday, and in the next year only Christmas and New Year's fall on one of my regular work days. I will be off those days!

How would you know anything? In all my years, it is the only thing I've seen or heard of, Ms Prissy Pants.
