Not the pp, but we have a plan through kitty wireless for $30/mo for each of us. We bought used iphones from amazon for $40.

PP here- Yup. Covered California pays for part of it, so it's $300. (Actually $296 but I rounded up!)

And about the phones, DH doesn't pay for his cell, and I'm on a family plan with 2 other people so I pay my share.

My point was, it can be done. It's not luxurious but fortunately we aren't suffering financially for now.

There is a NYC nannies FB group group that has a post about how much nannies in NYC make. It seems to be the consensus that these nannies commonly make less than $15!!!

I assumed the cost of living is so much higher than DC, right? How can a nanny live off $10-15 an hour?!?

Maybe they work more hours? It's just interesting that they think it's fine to get such low wages. While we freak if we are not paid at least $20.

I make 15$ an hour at 40 hours a week after taxes it's 524$ take home pay. I want to/need to leave to make more money but I love my charge. But after I'm done with my year in a few months I'll probably leave

Most nannies in NY are paid off the books- not as many government jobs. So their hourly rate is less. But they will take home the same amount.

I was a $15 an hour nanny when I was 22 one of the best families I have ever worked for. I left 2 years later to make more. It's just the way it works. Less exp=less pay. You build up to a higher salary.

Just reported this is the fifth most expensive rental market in the entire country.

The "most affordable" one bedroom apartment can be had for only $900/month... in Anacostia! How do they afford even that on less than $20-25/hr? Aren't housing costs supposed to be limited to 1/4 of your monthly earnings?

Is this where the "affordable" nannies live? Really?
Soon your affordable nanny will be leaving and arriving in the dark. Lovely.

Obviously minimum wage workers have to live with mom or dad, or someone else significant to pay the basic living expenses.

I doubt you'd ever find a $30/hr nanny abusing or neglecting your child.

I was a nanny and daycare assistant and loved my job too but eventually I decided this won't last because kids grow and move on and you need to find something else…This wasn't something I wanted to do all my life so I decided to drop it all and study nursing. As a pediatrician RN I will be able to enjoy children and care for them as I was doing as a nanny, plus I will enjoy a long career with decent pay and benefits, and room to grow.

Sure I was making the 500/week here in dc but at the end of the day it wasn't going to go anywhere. I now work as a server part time and bring home about the same every couple weeks but it is so I can study for my RN degree. Once I have that I will start at 27/h and within 5 years I may bring in 30-45/h reg rate….overtime will be insane.

I advise any young nanny to look into furthering their education because those kids will grow and move on and you have to keep figuring out where to go next.

Usually the very best people in their profession, come to it as a life-long calling. An office nurse can never do what a professional nanny does. Neither can a nanny do what a nurse does. The relationship with the child/family is very different.
